Healthier chocolate options I actually eat and love

Valentine’s, or Galentine’s, is right around the corner. Which honestly feels like perfect timing to talk about chocolate, specifically healthier chocolate options that still taste indulgent without wrecking your body. And the ones I have come to rely on over the years.

It has always amazed me when I meet people who do not have a sweet tooth. I am quietly envious of them. Because as far back as I can remember, I always had to watch my diet. And that is largely because I come from a family that owns their sweet tooth, loud and proud.

Why I Had to Rethink Chocolate

When I was first diagnosed with autoimmune issues over a decade ago, I was told very bluntly that any kind of healing would be seriously hindered by sugar. I remember the horror that rushed through my head in that moment. I was already in a lot of pain by then, but the thought of giving up sweets somehow felt just as painful.

That moment sent me on a mission. A quest, really, to find healthier ways to enjoy dessert without completely depriving myself. Somewhere along the way, I became what my friends now call the Queen of Healthy Desserts. I am known for baking and eating desserts that are gluten free, dairy free, and sugar free. And I promise, they are not as hard or overwhelming as they sound.

But before I get too far ahead of myself and spiral into dessert talk, let’s come back to why we are really here. Chocolate.

Chocolate is my thing and a warm, fudgy chocolate cake is my ultimate weakness. So early on in my healing journey, I made it my mission to find chocolates that felt better for my body but still delivered on taste. Chocolates I could enjoy and bake with, without the guilt or the aftermath.

And that search led me here. To a handful of healthier chocolate finds that I truly love.

My Go To Healthier Chocolate Picks

Here are my personal recommendations.

HU Chocolate

Hu chocolate bar made with clean ingredients and no refined sugar

Perfect for post dinner snacking. No refined sugar, cane sugar, sugar alcohols, erythritol, soy, gluten, palm oil, lecithins, or emulsifiers. Simple ingredients and genuinely great taste. I personally love their milk chocolate and use their chocolate chips in my baking all the time. Shop this pick.

Magic Chocolate

Magic Chocolate regenerative organic chocolate bar made from ethically sourced cocoa

What started as Dr. Bronner’s chocolate is now a brand of its own. Since 2021, they have converted over 5,498 acres of conventional cocoa fields in Ghana and Ivory Coast to regenerative organic certification, supporting hundreds of farmers with improved yields, soil fertility, and food security. Their chocolate is not just thoughtfully sourced; it is also genuinely delicious and my go to post dinner chocolate. Some stores may still carry the older Dr. Bronner’s version, but the new Magic Chocolate bars are worth seeking out especially now while they have a 50% off sale using code LOVE50. Shop this pick.

Spring & Mulberry

Spring and Mulberry plant based chocolate sweetened with dates

These are plant based, no added sugar chocolates that I use often in baking. Most are sweetened with dates. They do a beautiful job infusing fruits, nuts, florals, and even spices into their chocolate, which can elevate my baking to another level. Shop this pick.

Lily’s Chocolate

Lily’s chocolate bar sweetened with stevia and erythritol

I use these from time to time as they can sometimes be more accessible than some of the others. They do contain erythritol and are mostly sweetened with stevia, so if you have gut sensitivities, this is one to approach with a bit of caution. But still, these work well if you are avoiding refined sugar. Shop this pick.

Lakanto

Lakanto chocolate sweetened with monk fruit and erythritol

Sweetened with erythritol and monk fruit, these can be harder to find in local grocery stores, though I have occasionally spotted them at Sprouts. They work well for baking brownies and cakes, though I have not personally tried their chocolate bars yet. If you have, I would love to hear your thoughts. Shop this pick.

Sinless Treats Chocolate

Sinless Treats chocolate bar for diabetic friendly and keto friendly diets

One of my personal favorites. Locally owned and created by a cancer scientist turned chocolatier who set out to make chocolate that is as nutritious as it is decadent. Using her background in biomedical research and immunology, she developed chocolates sweetened with natural, plant derived ingredients that have little to no glycemic impact. They are both diabetic and keto friendly. I personally know Dr. Beata Lerman, and she is truly a gem. Her craft absolutely belongs on this list and especially in the hands of your loved ones on Valentine’s Day. Shop this pick.

A Quick Note on Finding Better Chocolate

Now, I am sure there are many more out there. Brands like WHIMS and others that you might stumble upon, especially if you enjoy strolling through Erewhon and casually breaking the bank. And hey, doesn’t hurt to splurge every now and then. But these are the chocolates I have personally tried, tested, and genuinely loved, and the best part is that you can find most of them at everyday grocery stores like Sprouts, Whole Foods, or H-E-B.
