How to find truly healthy snacks at Costco, without added sugar, processed fillers, or misleading “gluten free” labels
What’s one thing that almost everyone believes about gluten free food…but is actually a myth?
I’ll go first.
That gluten free automatically means healthy.
It sounds good. It feels like you are making a better choice. But once you start paying attention to labels, you realize pretty quickly that not all gluten free foods are created equal.
And honestly, this is where a lot of people get misled.
Because what most people are really searching for is not just gluten free. They are searching for healthier options, clean ingredients, low sugar snacks, something that actually supports their body.
But the food industry knows this too.
So what happens?
A product is labeled gluten free, but behind that label, it is packed with sugar, seed oils, fillers, or artificial additives to make up for the taste and texture that gluten usually provides.
So now you are eating something that is technically gluten free…but still working against your health.
If you have ever found yourself Googling things like
“are gluten free foods actually healthy”
or
“why do gluten free snacks have so much sugar”
you are not wrong to question it.
Because the reality is, many gluten free products are still highly processed foods.
And one of the biggest things I always come back to is sugar.
On average, Americans consume around 77 grams of sugar per day. That is about 19 teaspoons. And that number does not even account for how often sugar is hidden in foods we think are “healthy.”
When you remove gluten from a product, companies often compensate by adding more sugar or refined starches to improve taste.
So if you are not paying attention, you can easily end up consuming more sugar on a gluten free diet than you did before.
That is why for me, it has never just been about avoiding gluten.
It has been about looking at the full picture.
What are the ingredients?
Can I recognize them?
Is this actually nourishing, or just well marketed?
Since sugar naturally exists in whole foods, I try to be very intentional about avoiding added and refined sugars in my everyday snacks.
And this is where it actually gets interesting.
Because if you shop at Costco, which let’s be honest, most of us do, there are genuinely good options.
You just have to know what to look for.
I spent some time walking through and looking for gluten free snacks made with simple, real ingredients. No additives, no preservatives, no unnecessary fillers, and most importantly, no refined sugar.
And yes, they do exist.
Here are some snacks that support a clean eating lifestyle, not just a gluten free label.

At the end of the day, going gluten free can absolutely be a powerful shift for your health, especially if you are dealing with inflammation, gut issues, or autoimmune concerns.
But gluten free alone is not the goal.
Clean, healthier, informed choices are.
Because the question is not just
“is this gluten free?”
It is
“is this actually good for me?”
And once you start asking that question, everything changes.
